Democracy
Democracy is a political ideology where everything is about majority and the people. Freedom of speech and equality are vital for the people in order for democracy to work. Since it is all about majority, voting is the key to running a successful democratic country. People vote for many different things, ideas, policies and even people that they think are the best or want. This is different to dictatorship, monarchy because in democracy, the government needs to be supported and accepted by the citizens in order to run the country successfully. Although democracy is all about the people, a government still has to be present to maintain law and order.
After taking over the farm and chasing Mr. Jones away, the animals formed a democratic society where Snowball and Napoleon were in charge. Rules (The Seven Commandments) were formed by the animals together and one of them was "All animals are equal." (Chapter two, page 17). The rule applies to one of the major characteristics of Democracy, which is the equality of people. Without the equality, the whole purpose of Democracy would be ruined and not everyone would be heard and able to take part in voting. An aspect of democracy shown in the novel is the voting of the people. In chapter 5, page 31 " should decide all questions of farm policy, thought their decisions had to be ratified by a majority vote". That quote from the novel shows that all decisions on farm policy had to be made based on majority vote, like in Democracy where decisions are made through the majority vote of the people. Another example of voting in the book is in chapter 5, page 17 "At the meetings, Snowball often won over the majority by his brilliant speeches". Snowball often beats Napoleon in speeches as he is more preferred by the majority. This relates to elections for leader in a democracy, contestants would make speeches to the people, and depending on the amount of votes they get, the one with most votes wins the election and becomes leader.
Overall, the ideas of democracy has been widely used in the novel, as George Orwell aims to show his support and spread the message of the good of democracy to his readers.
