Dictatorship
Dictatorship is a political ideology which has the idea of absolute power and control by one person known as the dictator. A dictator comes to power through cunningness or by overthrowing the weak existing government. The dictator has all power to everything in a country. Laws, military, orders etc. The dictator also keeps strict control on the people. The people are not allowed to rebel against the dictator in any ways, speeches, newspapers, the media, anything that would give out a bad image of the dictator is banned. Schools and public organizations are forced to brainwash the people through propaganda, to believe in what the dictator wants them to believe in.
In Animal Farm, the original democracy state has been overthrown and replaced with the dictatorship of Napoleon. The reason being that the "government" system in the farm (Snowball) was weak, failing, and Napoleon was able to get majority of the people on his side with his cunning tactics. With the power, Napoleon then overthrows Snowball's position. In chapter 5, page 36 "slipped through a hole in the hedge and was seen no more". This relates to the process of the rise of a dictator, through the help of the people on the dictator's side and to overthrow the weak government. Another aspect of dictatorship is shown in the book in chapter 7, page 56 "The three hens...stated that Snowball had appeared to them in a dream and incited them to disobey Napoleon's orders. They too were slaughtered". That example shows the strict control Napoleon has set. The hens were killed when the rebelled against Napoleon the dictator's orders. Just like in a dictatorship, people could get arrested or executed when disobeying the dictator. One more aspect of dictatorship in the book is propaganda. In chapter 6, page 47 "Do you know who is responsible for this?... Snowball!". Squealer, the spreader of propaganda gets everyone to believe that it was Snowball who overthrew the windmill, when it was actually destroyed in a storm. Napoleon sees this as an opportunity to get the other animals on his side and to think that Snowball is the enemy. In a dictatorship, propaganda would be used to promote ideas, brainwash people into believing what the dictator wants them to believe. George Orwell has done a brilliant job in showing the negative side of a dictatorship and could be very relatable.
